Enjoy Jenin: Showcasing the Hidden Gems of Rural and Community-Based Tourism
Enjoy Jenin is a remarkable project commissioned by Caritas Jerusalem in collaboration with three local councils in the Jenin province of the northern West Bank. This collaborative effort aimed to map and document 110 tourism assets within the region, encompassing 13 villages in the scenic area of Marj Ben Amer and its surroundings. The goal was to create a comprehensive multilingual platform along with native mobile apps for Android and iOS, promoting the region as a captivating destination for rural and community-based tourism.
As the project lead, I had the privilege of overseeing the work of three dedicated teams responsible for development, asset mapping, and the production of three enticing promotional destination marketing videos, each showcasing the unique offerings of one of the local councils. Over a span of more than six months, our team worked in close collaboration with local partners, stakeholders, and industry members to bring the project to fruition.
Undertaking such an endeavor in an area at the early stages of tourism development presented its own set of challenges. Our primary objective was to leverage both tangible and intangible resources to reflect the rich touristic and cultural value of the region, with a particular emphasis on rural, slow, and community-based tourism. Through meticulous mapping, we documented the region’s breathtaking landscapes, historical sites, traditional crafts, gastronomy, and vibrant local culture. Each asset was meticulously cataloged with detailed descriptions, captivating photographs, metadata, and geolocation information, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging user experience.
The development of a multilingual platform and two native mobile apps was a key component of the project. These digital tools were designed to serve as a gateway for travelers, providing them with invaluable information, interactive maps, and immersive experiences that would enable them to explore the hidden gems of Jenin at their own pace. Whether it’s a serene hike through picturesque olive groves, a visit to a traditional pottery workshop, or savoring authentic local cuisine, the platform and apps empower visitors to truly connect with the region’s natural beauty and vibrant community life.
The collaboration with the local councils was instrumental in showcasing the region’s unique identity and fostering sustainable tourism development. By engaging with local communities, we were able to not only capture the essence of Jenin but also empower local residents to actively participate in and benefit from tourism activities. This approach contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage, the promotion of economic opportunities, and the overall well-being of the local population.
